Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
